Dad Gear / The decision

Do you actually need a diaper pail?

A diaper pail is worth it when the outside bin is inconvenient. Pick Ubbi for ordinary trash bags or Dekor Eko Plus for foot-pedal convenience.

Ubbi Steel Odor Locking Diaper Pail

    The call

    Worth it.

Choose Ubbi if ordinary trash bags are the priority. Choose Dekor Eko Plus if hands-free opening matters more and you are comfortable buying its refills. Skip both if a small lidded bin and regular emptying already solve the problem.

    Best for

Parents living in apartments or multi-story homes

    Skip if

Families whose existing wet-bag or diaper-service routine already works

    The short version

The useful question is not whether a diaper pail is mandatory. It is how far you want to walk with a dirty diaper at two in the morning. A small lidded bin and frequent emptying can work. A dedicated pail earns its floor space when the outside bin is downstairs, across the apartment building, or simply one chore too many. Neither option eliminates the need to empty it regularly.

    A good fit if

    • Parents living in apartments or multi-story homes
    • Anyone with a sensitive nose
    • Parents who want to minimize daily chores

    You can pass if

    • Families whose existing wet-bag or diaper-service routine already works
    • People who already take trash out multiple times a day

    What actually matters

    • Odor control matters more than fancy refill systems.

    • Standard trash bag compatibility saves real money over a year.

    • Apartment layouts and stair-heavy homes make this more useful than people expect.

Spend less. Solve the same problem.

    The smarter alternative

You can use a standard small trash can with a tight lid and commit to emptying it every single evening without fail.

    Before you buy

    • Buying the prettiest pail and ignoring refill costs.
    • Assuming you can stay disciplined about nightly trash runs during the newborn stage.

    A few more answers

Can you skip the diaper pail and just use a normal trash can?

Yes. A small lidded bin can be enough if taking the trash outside is easy. A dedicated pail is a convenience purchase, not a requirement.

What changed with the Dekor Eko Plus?

Dekor says the current Eko pails use 70% recycled materials. It rates the Plus for up to 60 newborn diapers; treat that as a capacity claim, not an emptying schedule. This recommendation now covers the Eko Plus rather than the older Plus. The photo shows the current model in its packaging.

Can you use it with cloth diapers?

Dekor offers a washable Plus-size cloth liner. Follow your diaper maker or service's storage and washing instructions rather than assuming a disposable-diaper routine is interchangeable.

When is a diaper pail less necessary?

It matters less when your existing disposal or laundry routine is already convenient.

How to Fly With a Car Seat Without Losing Your Mind

Flying with kids is already a small logistical miracle. You are moving people, bags, snacks, electronics, stuffed animals, documents, maybe a stroller, and at least one child who will suddenly announce that they need to use the bathroom the moment boarding begins. Now add a car seat. The first time you do it, the questions multiply quickly. Can you use the seat on the plane? Should you check it instead? Is it going to fit? Does your kid need their own ticket? Where does the seat go? What happens when you land? And why does something designed to keep a small child safely in one place somehow become the largest object you own the second you walk into an airport? The easiest way to simplify all of this is to make one decision before you leave home: **Are you using the car seat on the airplane, or are you just trying to get it to the destination?** Those are two different problems, and trying to solve both at the check-in counter is how vacations begin with marital silence.
